Will Smith’s block buster hit “Seven Pounds†highlighted the dangers of texting with a mobile device while driving an automobile. In the film a horrible car accident was caused by the primary character as he attempts to text and drive.
The United Kingdom has addressed the dangers of this wide spread phenomenon by producing a graphic and controversial “Public Service Announcement†(psa). The psa shows a young woman texting as she is driving an automobile with passengers. Her lack of concentration based on the texting causes her to cross the center line and collide head on with a family driving in the opposite direction. The impact of the collision is displayed by an inside car camera view and shows the passengers heads slamming into windows and dash boards. In addition, the emergency response is dramatized with the jaws of life cutting a young lady out of a car and passengers being air lifted.
Numerous studies have concluded that texting on a mobile device while driving can create a greater danger to the driver then smoking marijuana or drinking while intoxicated. The state of California passed a text messaging law in January of 2009 but it has limited consequences. Based on the dangers that texting and driving can create, I am the belief more laws must be put in place.
Despite the numerous critics of the psa it does awake your thoughts and hopefully will prevent drivers from answering or sending a message from their mobile device in traffic.
This video is hard core…don’t let young children watch this video!!!!
