The California hands free phone device legislation that was signed to combat the dangers of California drivers speaking and texting on cell phones while driving, has not placed a resounding ring of fear in the ears of California drivers.
Despite, the California Highway Patrol issuing more than 150,000 California cell phone citations since the legislation was enacted in 2008, the number of new citations continues to grow. The state of California has found a new revenue source in the mission to make highways safer.
Despite the danger that talking on your cell phone without a hands free device creates, each dat thousands of motorists in California break the law. Those included in the recent crack down are the first lady of California Maria Shriver. Pictures emerged as recently as last week of Shriver driving with a phone to ear. In the month of September the California Highway Patrol issued nearly 12,300 citations; this was nearly 4,000 more citations than were issued during July of 2008.
Texting while operating an automobile has been known to create a dangerous situation. When the actions of drinking and driving are combined the results can be similar to drinking and driving or using smoking marijuana and driving. California may need to reexamine the fines associated with these tickets to give them more bite.
